Running a factory or a company is a big worry, and it includes worrying about Space Management and storage solutions.  Just with simple ways you can increase the capacity of your warehouse to 15-20%. Sometimes movements of pallets difficult and limited thanks to wrong management and wrong product choice.

Moving products from one place to another is not only time consuming but also increases cost of storage. That's why sometimes instead of getting new warehouses we need to understand right ways of space management and that is enough to solve some of the problems.
The first thing to do is understand your stocks and if there is any unnecessary objects taking space of your warehouse. And best way to do this is managing the incoming and outgoing of inventory from your warehouse on a weekly basis.This will also tell how long it will take to empty something extra or to sell off present stocks. These are key points to consider  when it comes to space utilization.

The Beginning
Understand the capacity and utilization of your present storage profile. Completely in detail understand the layout and structure of your storage, including rack configuration, slotting/pick philosophy, receiving, putaway, replenishment, inventory management and, packing and shipping. Also consider seasonal peaks and the outgoing and incoming flow.

Use  Vertical Space Of The Warehouse
Take a look at your warehouse structure and pick storage to utilize vertical space too. Make sure all the vertical height is used properly and the design of storage maximizes utilization without compromising with other facilities.

Understand Your Department Space
Understand which functions require the vertical space and understand which does not and accordingly design the layout without any error. Make sure your department matches with the storage capacity of the building
Strengthen Locations
If you have multiple spaces for same inventory storage best option would be to combine them and get the maximum out of it. Separation will lead to loss of space.
Choose Right-Size Slots
Choose different and right size slots as per the inventory which is to be stored. Make sure you differentiate the sizes for best outcome from it. Also 4-7 different size racks is probably the apt number of variation most of the times. Might be different for you. Use this principle for overstocks too.
Utilize Off-Site Location for Overstocking
If your industry demands you to store a large quantity of extra inventory for a few items, look for some type of offsite storage for the extras, resultantly freeing up space for helping with the present stock operations.

Take Up Drop Shipping
If your business deals with storage and shipping of large items, consider using some form of drop shipping to decrease the in-house storage taken and costs.

Increase Aisle Widths
Try to design such that minimum width of aisle required to fit the inventory handling equipment used without any compromise on operating efficiency.

Cross Docking
Try considering cross docking large stocks of back orders or single-line orders to decrease the space of inventory which require large storage locations.

Keep It Simple
Choose simple racking systems and simple solutions over complex solutions, choose the simple option. You'll thank me for this later. For instance, consider putting pallet rack tiers upward. An example of complex system could be to move racking to narrow aisles. Is there any return on investment for your solutions?

Warehouse space often includes 15% - 20% of the cost price per unit. Moving to new place is expensive and can take a lot of time. So make sure you have put someone responsible for your ongoing storage and warehouse space utilization analysis process.
